Japanese Grammar (Bunpō) Cheat Sheet: The Quick Reference My Students (and I) Actually Use

I’ve been offering Japanese lessons through StrainFamCo tutoring for a while now, and if there’s one thing I’m sure on, it’s that Japanese grammar is overwhelming at first. Particles after every word, verb conjugations, counters that change based on the objects you’re counting… it’s a lot! Even as someone who’s studied and taught it, I still catch myself flipping through notes or apps mid-lesson to double-check a form.

That’s why I compiled this Japanese Grammar (Bunpō) Cheat Sheet FREE—a one-page (front and back) reference sheet that actually does a pretty good job laying out the basics.

It’s very similar to the one I used when I was studying to live in Japan, so I know it works!

Why Japanese Grammar Feels Tricky (and Why a Cheat Sheet Helps)

Beginners (and even intermediate learners) often get stuck because Japanese doesn’t follow the same rules as English. There’s just particles telling you what to do with the word before it, verb bases changing for tense/mood/politeness, and counters that feel like a whole new vocabulary category. Textbooks explain it well if you have the time to sit and read extensively, but sometimes it’s nice to have it all in one place.

A good cheat sheet is not a full textbook replacement—it’s the thing you study until the patterns stick in your brain from repeated use. My tutoring students love having one handy. It gives them something tangible and small to focus on and keeps lessons moving.

What’s Actually on This Free Cheat Sheet

This isn’t some dense wall of text. I updated it recently to make it cleaner and easier to read at a glance. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Verb bases — The foundation for conjugations (godan, ichidan, irregulars).
  • Key particles — Wa, ga, o, ni, de, to, and others, explained simply.
  • Common counters — People, things, animals, long cylindrical objects, flat things and other counters.
  • Essential grammar points — A solid selection of everyday structures (like base te-form, potential, causative, passive basics) without all the overwhelming details.

It’s designed as a printable quick reference for Japanese classes—perfect for teachers to hand out, post in the classroom, or share digitally. Just the stuff students need when they’re practicing speaking or prepping for a quiz.

How I Use It in Tutoring (and How You Can Too)

In my sessions, I give students a copy right away. We refer to it constantly:

  • “What particle goes here? Check the sheet.”
  • “How do I say I won’t verb politely? Bases are right there.”
  • “How would I say 4 books?”

Over time, they rely on it less because the patterns become automatic. It’s repeated, low-pressure exposure building real skills. Teachers in classrooms can do the same: laminate a class set, add it to interactive notebooks, or email it home for homework support. You can even shrink it down to 1/4 page size and print 4 at a time!
